Contrast this measured response with the treatment of the suspects in the Lawrence case. By all accounts they were unsavoury characters, and seemingly unapologetic racists. Nevertheless, for a number of reasons – police incompetence and racism among them – they were not found guilty of any crime. Yet due process, innocence until proven guilt, environmental mitigation, the belief in reform: all of these established principles were abandoned by the popular press and liberal media alike. Civil libertarians went suddenly quiet as newspapers portrayed the suspects as both evil and guilty and crowds gathered at the public inquiry to scream and throw missiles at them. As Michael Collins wrote in his book on the white working class, The Likes of Us: 'It was the kind of behaviour identified with those small crowds of largely white workingclass women who sometimes gather when a child murderer within their neighbourhood has been convicted, to pelt the police van that protects the killer with eggs, and scream abuse. The same journalists who frown on such illiberal behaviour, who dismiss such activities as worthy of "the mob", failed to apply such disdain to the unruly crowd outside the Lawrence inquiry, where apparently the public opinion of the crowd rather than the populism of the mob was making itself heard.'
